If you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, or recovering from an injury, it’s only natural to look for the most effective and natural way to feel better again. Two of the most recognised approaches in the UK are physiotherapy and chiropractic care — both aim to improve your mobility, ease discomfort, and restore function without the use of drugs or surgery.
While both professions share a common goal, chiropractic care offers a distinct, spine-focused approach that many people find to be a game-changer in their health journey. So, what’s the difference — and why do so many of our patients choose chiropractic?
A Shared Mission — But a Different Focus
Both physiotherapy and chiropractic care help people overcome pain, regain mobility, and live healthier lives. But their methods and philosophies can be quite different.
Physiotherapy tends to focus on rehabilitation after injury or illness, using exercises, stretches, and advice to support recovery.
Chiropractic care, on the other hand, takes a more holistic view of how the spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system work together. Chiropractors aim to uncover the root cause of dysfunction — especially when it’s linked to spinal alignment or nervous system stress — and correct it through gentle, hands-on adjustments. Our patients often tell us they feel more than just pain relief — they feel better in themselves, more balanced, and more in control of their wellbeing.
What Chiropractors Do Differently
Chiropractors are trained to assess and treat how spinal alignment and nervous system function affect the entire body. Using safe, specific spinal adjustments (also known as manipulations), chiropractic care aims to:
- Improve movement in restricted joints
- Reduce muscle tension
- Support the body’s natural healing abilities
- Help you feel and function at your best
You’ll receive care that’s completely tailored to your body and your goals — not just a standard programme. After your initial consultation and a thorough assessment, we’ll discuss a clear, personalised care plan before any treatment begins.
Highly Trained. Fully Regulated. Focused on You.
In the UK, chiropractors are among the most highly trained professionals in musculoskeletal health. We complete a 4–5 year Master’s degree with extensive study in spinal mechanics, neurology, diagnostic imaging, and hands-on techniques.
To legally practise, we must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) — the UK’s official regulatory body — and follow strict professional and ethical standards. Only GCC-registered chiropractors can use the title “Chiropractor,” and while we may use the courtesy title “Doctor of Chiropractic (DC),” it’s always made clear that we are not medical doctors.
Chiropractic Techniques: Personalised, Precise, Powerful
At our clinic, we offer a range of chiropractic techniques, chosen based on your condition, comfort, and goals. These may include:
- Diversified Technique – a classic spinal adjustment aimed at restoring joint motion
- Gonstead Technique – highly detailed spinal work based on in-depth assessments
- Drop Technique – uses a special table for low-force adjustments
- Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) – a gentle balancing approach supporting the nervous system
- Koren Specific Technique (KST) – uses a handheld instrument for precise, comfortable corrections
While some adjustments may produce a gentle ‘pop’, many techniques are virtually silent and incredibly gentle.
What About Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapists are also regulated professionals, completing a 3-year degree (or 2-year postgrad course), and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Physiotherapy often works well for general rehabilitation, recovery from surgery, or exercise-based injury support.
At times, physiotherapy and chiropractic care can work well together — especially when combining manual treatment with guided rehab. That said, many of our patients come to us after trying other treatments and finding they need a different, more hands-on and holistic approach.
What Can Chiropractic Care Help With?
At The Chiropractors, we regularly support people dealing with a wide range of musculoskeletal issues. Many come to us for help with back pain, whether it’s a general ache, lumbago, or ongoing discomfort that’s affecting day-to-day life. We also see patients with neck pain, particularly when it’s mechanical in nature rather than caused by an injury like whiplash.
Chiropractic care may also benefit those struggling with joint pain — especially in the knees or hips linked to osteoarthritis — as well as muscle spasms, minor sports injuries, and headaches that originate from the neck. Some patients visit us to support migraine prevention, or to find relief from feelings of tension and an inability to relax.
While everyone’s reason for seeking care is different, our goal is always the same: to help you move better, feel better, and live more comfortably — without relying on medication or invasive procedures.
Is Chiropractic Safe?
Chiropractic care is considered a safe, non-invasive, and effective alternative to medication and surgery when provided by a qualified professional. Mild soreness after treatment is possible — just like after a good workout — but serious side effects are rare.
We always carry out a detailed case history, physical exam, and discuss any red flags before treatment begins. Your comfort, safety, and clarity are our priority.
Choosing What’s Right for You
Everyone is different, and so are your healthcare needs. You might prefer physiotherapy if you’re recovering post-surgery or need exercise-based rehab. But if you’re looking for a hands-on, whole-body approach that addresses the spine, nervous system and movement patterns — chiropractic care may be the better fit. Many people come to us after trying other options and find that chiropractic gives them the freedom, comfort, and confidence they’ve been missing
We’re here to help you understand your body, make sense of your symptoms, and find a natural path forward. Whether you’re struggling with back pain, tension, or joint stiffness — or you just want to feel more aligned and energised — we’d love to meet you.
