How Pregnancy Can Trigger Sciatica Symptoms

Pregnancy is a beautiful and transformative journey, but it can also bring unexpected discomforts — especially in the lower back and legs. One common complaint we hear at our Solihull chiropractic clinic is sciatica during pregnancy. If you’re experiencing shooting pain down the back of your leg, tingling, or numbness, you’re not alone — and help is available.

    What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to irritation of the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in your body — which runs from your lower back through the hips and down each leg. When this nerve is compressed or irritated, it can cause pain, numbness, or weakness, typically on one side of the body.

Why Does Sciatica Happen During Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, your body undergoes significant physical and hormonal changes to accommodate your growing baby. These changes can put pressure on the spine and surrounding muscles, especially as the baby grows and shifts position. In some cases, your baby may press directly on the sciatic nerve, triggering discomfort and pain — this is often referred to as baby pressing on sciatic nerve.

Other factors that may contribute to pregnancy sciatica include:

    • Postural changes: As your centre of gravity shifts, so does your posture, placing additional strain on the lower back and pelvis.
    • Weight gain: Added weight can put pressure on spinal joints and discs.
    • Hormonal shifts: The release of the hormone relaxin allows ligaments to stretch to prepare for childbirth, but this can destabilise the pelvis and irritate the sciatic nerve.
    • Tight muscles: Especially in the glutes and lower back, tightness in these areas can aggravate the nerve.

These changes can also lead to maternity lower back pain, which, while not always sciatica, can still significantly affect your mobility and well-being.

    How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

At The Chiropractors (of Solihull and Sutton Coldfield), we provide tailored care for pregnant patients. We understand the unique needs of the body during this time and offer safe, gentle techniques to support spinal and pelvic alignment.

Our approach is always guided by your comfort and stage of pregnancy. While we don’t claim to “cure” sciatica, many patients have found chiropractic care helpful in managing their discomfort and improving mobility — especially when combined with appropriate movement, posture advice, and other supportive care.

    Chiropractic may:

    • Reduce tension in the lower back and pelvis
    • Support optimal alignment, reducing pressure on the sciatic nerve
    • Improve range of motion and daily comfort

If you’re struggling with pain that radiates from your lower back into your leg — or simply want to feel more at ease in your body as your pregnancy progresses — we’re here to help.
